HHS Reforestation Project

Picture 1
Picture 2

Howard High School just completed the first of a three phase reforestation project. Over a three day period more than 200 students and staff members volunteered to help with the organization of this project and planted over 165 native trees and shrubs. It is important to note that student groups included all grade levels, at least four content areas and those receiving special education services (including our ALS classes) as well as those taking regular through advance placement classes.

We were able to procure a grant for $11,000.00 for the Chesapeake Bay Trust. The trees and shrubs were donated by the Apache Foundation. We also received expert consultation from Howard County’s own Greg Connor and our liaison with the Maryland Department of Environmental and Outdoor Education, Karen Mullin.

Since the inception of the idea of becoming a Green School, structures of learning have been placed throughout our school building, the amount of material being recycled has doubled and we have raised the awareness of the students and staff within our building and the local community regarding environmental issues.

But wait….. there’s more!!!

Not only is this a reforestation project, but we are conducting actual scientific research for two drought products.

The co-coordinators of this project are science and special education teachers Cheryl Rice and Debbie Bates, respectively.

HOWARD HIGH STUDENT PARKING 2007/2008

Howard County Public Schools has mandated that all students who would like to receive a parking permit must attend a program on driving safety. Students must attend the program with one or both of their parents. The program will be held on August 21 nd, August 23 rd, and August 28 th at 7:00 p.m. in the school's auditorium. You need to attend only once. Please bring a pen or pencil to the program. Attendance at one of these safety programs does not guarantee a parking permit.

Seniors will be given the first opportunity to receive parking permits. Applications for parking permits will be available at the Driver Safety Programs or in the main office once school starts. Seniors may begin to turn in their completed applications and the $20 parking permit fee (checks should be made payable to Howard High School) to the main office beginning on August 27 th. Permits will be distributed to seniors on a first-come, first-served basis as they turn in all of their completed paperwork (including proof of attendance at one of the driver safety programs listed above). The deadline for seniors to turn in their completed application and $20 parking permit fee is August 30 th. After seniors get their permits, juniors may receive permits. If there are not enough spots for juniors, they will be distributed by a lottery system. Juniors may begin to hand in their completed applications to the main office on September 4 th; the deadline for juniors to turn in completed parking permit applications is September 7 th.

Please note that ALL obligations MUSTbe cleared prior to receiving a parking permit.

On May 23, 1978, the Howard County Council introduced legislation at the request of the County Executive and the Ornithological Society making the designation official.
