TOMS Shoe Drive

Howard High's TOMS campus club is sponsoring a shoe drive in order to donate used but functional shoes to various organizations in need. We are asking everyone to pitch in and drop off used shoes (all sizes and styles) to room A102 to help with this tremendous effort by the TOMS club. If you are interested in what is this thing called "TOMS," please check out the link below to learn about a for-profit company that is making a tremendous impact among the worlds most vulnerable populations.

ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL  After Prom FOR HOWARD STUDENTS!

Oh my goodness!  HHS PTSA hosted 520 students on May 9, 2010 at the AMC Theater for a great night of fun and food!  Thank you so much to all the parents who came out to volunteer and support this fantastic night!  Thank you also to all the businesses who donated cash, food, prizes and support for our event.
We cannot do this without the support of our community, so a great big thanks goes out to all the parents who supported this event, whether in the form of a cash donation, working on the committee, volunteering at the After Prom Party, or donating a prize. Consider your time and money well spent, because those 520 kids who came to the After Prom Event, were 520 kids who were NOT out at a private party engaging in potentially dangerous behaviors.  We are so happy to be able to offer this opportunity to our students – to make good choices on this most important night.
Only one thing marred our night of fun, unfortunately one of the prizes was stolen from the prize table.  A 32 gb iTouch was taken sometime during the night.  We were very disappointed that someone felt the need to do this, but we are taking steps to change the way we display prizes in the future so no one else will be tempted.  I know the kids were also very disappointed that we could not offer this prize – after so many had put their raffle tickets in that bag!
Other than that small occurrence the night was a HUGE success!  We happened to coincide with opening weekend for Iron Man 2 and were pleased to be able to offer this movie in two theaters to accommodate everyone!
Please consider being part of the party next year!  We especially welcome parents of Freshmen and Sophomores – they are less likely to be overwhelmed with the many activities which take up time on Prom Night and throughout the year for parents of Juniors and Seniors – plus your kids won’t say “I don’t want you to be there.”
Thanks so much again for all the support –
Lin Guba                      Susan Brand                        Angie Kozlowski

School Lunch Meals

Want to Know the Nutritional Value of a School Lunch?
The HCPSS's Food and Nutrition Service recently added a new link to their webpage that parents and students are sure to enjoy. At www.schoolmenu.com, families can view the daily lunch menu for their specific school, along with the menus for the next week as soon as they are posted. In addition, the nutritional value of each menu item is available in a drop down box. Parents and students can use the information to plan their choices for the day and calculate their nutritional intake at the same time.

According to Food and Nutrition Services Director Mary Klatko, www.schoolmenu.com is a fun, colorful site that includes features like nutrition and fitness messages, exercise tips, allergen information, a kids' area with food-related activities, coupons for parents to print and use, frequently asked questions, as well as meal prices, pre-paid meal plans and the local weather.

"It is a very informative site," says Klatko. "We hope the school communities in Howard County will find it useful and interesting."

HOWARD HIGH STUDENT PARKING 2009/20010

b Howard County Public Schools has mandated that all students who would like to receive a parking permit must attend a program on driving safety.  Students must attend the program with one or both of their parents. You need to attend only once.  Please bring a pen or pencil to the program.  Applications for a parking permit will be handed out in this meeting.  Attendance does not guarantee a parking permit.

Seniors will be given the first opportunity to receive parking permits.  After seniors get their permits, juniors may receive permits.  If there are not enough spots for juniors, they will be distributed by a lottery system.

All obligations must be paid prior to receiving a parking permit.

HELP! SUPPORT THE 2010 HOWARD HIGH SCHOOL YEARBOOK
It's still not too late to purchase a 2010 Howard High School Yearbook...but time is running out! We need your help! So far, our yearbook sales are down from last year. The quality of our yearbook hinges on the number of books we sell. So, if you've been planning to buy a yearbook at some point and just haven't gotten around to it, we are asking that you make your purchase ASAP. The sooner we meet our numbers, the sooner we will know that the amazing yearbook we are designing can remain intact with no pages cuts or deletions.

Why buy a yearbook for your son or daughter? It is the one book from high school you can bet your child will look at countless times after they graduate. It helps us to remember our past, and can help us renew and maintain relationships we build during our high school years. Maybe they don't seem to appreciate the yearbook now, but you can be assured they will someday in the future.

To buy the 2010 yearbook, you can log onto the site at www. jostensyearbooks.com . Follow the instructions, as the website is reasonably easy to use. If you don't have your order number from the mailings you have received from Jostens throughout the year, don't worry. The site shows you how to create a new one you can use. Or, if you prefer, you can use the toll free number to order, 1-866-282-1516 (24 hours a day). Another way to order is to visit the Howard High website at www.howardhighschool.net. Once there, click on the link "Purchase a Yearbook" in the column below the school picture.

Thank you for for your support of the 2010 Howard High School yearbook. If you have any questions, you can call Brad Dyer, the yearbook adviser, at 410-313-2867

HS Writing Manual & Style Guide

The contents of this manual are designed to provide a baseline of expectations for writing at the high school level in Howard County public schools and to standardize basic stylistic elements across all high schools for students and teachers. This publication is intended to be a resource for students and to supplement classroom instruction. Incoming freshmen are generally familiar with much of the language in this manual, such as the “6+1
Traits of Writing®” and “The Big6™ Information Literacy Strategies” that are introduced in elementary and middle school language arts classes. Other elements may be new and are taught as part of the essential curriculum. Individual teachers in various content areas may assign additional or modified requirements depending on the discipline, the course, and the specific assignment. The development of this document was a team effort of the Secondary Language Arts Office and the High School English Instructional Team Leaders.

All of the Computers at Howard High School Use Office 2003

Often documents (Word, PPT, and Excel) created at home cannot be read using school computers.  This creates problems because the documents cannot be edited by students or graded by teachers.  While there are converters available, they do not always work.  If you follow the steps on the attached document, your documents will be compatible and usable on computers at HoHS.  This will insure that you can work between home and school as well as meet assignment deadlines.

If you have any questions see Mr. Bulger in the Media Center.
Please see the attached document.
