Give the Gift of Reading

Howard High’s PTSA is collecting new and gently used children’s books for all grade levels, now through March. The books will be distributed to school children in the county in April. A drop box is in the Media Center or call 410-379-9030 to make other arrangements.

Sign up for Safeway Escrip now!

The funds we receive from Safeway e-Scrip go directly to the Media Center at Howard. Supporters go to www.escrip.com.

If renewing, click on the large checkmark (click here to renew) located to the left of the page, midway down. Follow directions on next page.
If registering for the first time, you must have your Safeway card number. Click on Enroll Now located at the upper right hand corner. Follow the directions on the next page.
The Media Center uses this money to purchase toner for the student printer ($200 each), cameras and accessories used by students throughout the school, and equipment that is needed but for which there are no county funds available. These funds are needed more now than ever because of the budget cuts.

Subway Fundraising

Individuals can participate by obtaining a SUBWAY® Card at a local SUBWAY® restaurant, loading it with funds and then linking it to HHS at www.SubwaySchoolRewards.com.  Every time you use it to pay, a portion of your purchase will go back to the school.  Give a Subway Gift Card and give twice.

PBIS BEGINS FIFTH YEAR AT HOWARD

As we return to school this fall, this school year marks the fifth year that Howard High School, like many schools throughout the county, state, and nation, has incorporated PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports) into the over-all school management program. PBIS is a proven approach to enhance learning by focusing on positive behaviors and reducing out-of-class time by developing and evaluating innovative, student-specific discipline plans. Beginning in the fall of 2005, and expanding each year, -- Howard’s teachers have made a habit of acknowledging positive behaviors utilizing PAWS -- a small award slip of paper which, in turn, leads to the chance of receiving a variety of rewards for students who were awarded a PAW. Also sharing in these reward opportunities are those students who did not receive disciplinary referrals or any “E's” on their report cards. Those students who do encounter disciplinary difficulties usually have their first disciplinary intervention with a member of the PBIS Team who, using a scaled approach to discipline, will work with the student and their parents to find a satisfactory way to avoid future conflicts. Over the last 4 years at Howard High School, this PBIS approach has dramatically reduced the number of disciplinary referrals handled by school administrators, thus reducing the amount of out-of-class time. This fact alone has played a major role in improved academic performance.
This year’s PBIS Team at Howard is led by school psychologist, Dr. Natasha Smith, and school assistant principals Mark Covington, Kedre’ Fairley, Stephen Levy, and Lisa Veslany. The grade-level coordinators are P.E. teacher Laura Foerster (9 th grade) and Social Studies teacher David Ditman (10th, 11 th and 12 th grades).
Planned awards this school year will include quarterly drawings, assemblies, and for the 9 th graders, a field day and bowling excursion.
The PBIS Team is excited to be starting a new school year and also about the PBIS plans for the year. They are convinced that the PBIS approach to enhanced education opportunities for all students at Howard High will only serve to show that Howard High School has most certainly gone from good to great !

Dave Ditman, PBIS coordinator for grades 10 - 12

GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS

Graduation: Please make sure you continue to monitor and review your student’s progress towards graduation. Know what graduation requirements they need to get their diploma. Please contact Guidance if you have any questions or concerns.
Ask your student… Have you completed 75 hours of community service? Have you completed your World of Work which consists of a resume and an interview? These components must be completed prior to graduation.
Are you a new student this year? Please check with your counselor because you will have hours to complete for community service and it will still be necessary for you to complete the World of Work component which occurred the first week in December.
Outstanding Obligations: If your student owes money, a signed Release of Records form, owes a textbook or material to the Media Center or to a Teacher, then they need to fulfill this obligation. Students will NOT receive their graduation tickets when they are distributed at the end of the year until this is done.
