PROJECT SAFE AFTER PROM COMMITTEE

PROJECT SAFE AFTER PROM
HHS After Prom was a Great Success!
Thank you to all the volunteers, HHS Parents, HHS Administration, PTA Council of Howard County, and the staff at AMC Theatres for your support of the Project Safe After-Prom Event!
We sold 515 tickets to After Prom, and a total of 491 students attended the event on Saturday, May 9, 2009 at the AMC Theatre at Columbia Mall. Of these students, 46 were students who did not attend prom – but had a safe place to celebrate with the rest of their friends that night!
There were over 75 parent volunteers there to help out, and 46 businesses and over 100 parents supported the event with their generous donations! Colleges and Universities from across the country also donated spirit wear and other items.

GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS
Graduation: Please make sure you continue to monitor and review your student’s progress towards graduation. Know what graduation requirements they need to get their diploma. Please contact Guidance if you have any questions or concerns.
Ask your student… Have you completed 75 hours of community service? Have you completed your World of Work which consists of a resume and an interview? These components must be completed prior to graduation.
Are you a new student this year? Please check with your counselor because you will have hours to complete for community service and it will still be necessary for you to complete the World of Work component which occurred the first week in December.
Outstanding Obligations: If your student owes money, a signed Release of Records form, owes a textbook or material to the Media Center or to a Teacher, then they need to fulfill this obligation. Students will NOT receive their graduation tickets when they are distributed at the end of the year until this is done.

PBIS-Positive Behavioral Intervention System
PBIS BEGINS FOURTH YEAR AT HOWARD
As we return to school this fall, this school year marks the fourth year that Howard High School, like many schools throughout the county, state, and nation, has utilized the PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports). PBIS is a proven approach to enhance learning by focusing on positive behaviors and reducing out-of-class time by developing and evaluating innovative, student-specific discipline plans. Beginning with the current senior class’ entry as freshmen in the fall of 2005 and expanding each year, -- Howard’s teachers have made a habit of acknowledging positive behaviors utilizing PAWS -- a small award slip of paper which, in turn, leads to the chance of receiving a variety of rewards for students who were awarded a PAW. Also sharing in these reward opportunities are those students who did not receive disciplinary referrals or any “E's” on their report cards. Those students who do encounter disciplinary difficulties usually have their first disciplinary intervention with a member of the PBIS Team who, using a scaled approach to discipline, will work with the student and their parents to find a satisfactory way to avoid future conflicts. Over the last 3 years at Howard High School, this PBIS approach has dramatically reduced the number of disciplinary referrals handled by school administrators, thus reducing the amount of out-of-class time. It has also played a major role in improved academic performance.
This year’s PBIS Team at Howard is led by school psychologist, Dr. Natasha Smith, and school assistant principals Mark Covington, Kedre’ Fairley, Stephen Levy, and Lisa Veslany. The grade-level coordinators are P.E. teacher Laura Foerster (9 th grade); new to Howard P.E. teacher and head football coach Bruce Strunk (10 th grade); and Social Studies teacher David Ditman (11 th and 12 th grade).
Planned awards this school year will include quarterly drawings, assemblies, and for the 9 th graders, a field day and bowling excursion.
The PBIS Team is excited to be starting a new school year and also about the PBIS plans for the year. They are convinced that the PBIS approach to enhanced education opportunities for all students at Howard High will only serve to show that Howard High School has most certainly gone from good to great !
